You can walk a mile in someone’s shoes, or a few alongside them.
In August I joined two long-time friends celebrating 20 years of walking together for fitness and fellowship in and around Oleskiw, a west Edmonton neighbourhood that brushes up against the city’s river valley.

An occasional jogger myself, the only voices I hear on the trail come from a curated list of podcasts designed to drown out the sound of panting, so it was a nice change of pace to enjoy some stimulating conversation.
My brisk, six-kilometre stroll with Dror Goldreich and Ben Benjaminy covered more than just a neighbourhood. We talked about politics, family, history, origins of our names and the twists and turns that have defined our lives — for better and for worse.
I often end a run just happy to have finished, but for the first time in about as long as I can remember, I ended our journey hoping it would have lasted a few kilometres longer.
