WVU takes on Marshall in Charleston

The West Virginia University baseball team heads to the state capital today to take on in-state rival Marshall. First pitch from GoMart Ballpark in Charleston is set for 6 p.m.

West Virginia will be the home team for this neutral site contest, the first of three games between the two Mountain State schools this season.

The Mountaineers are coming off a series victory over BYU in at Kendrick Family Ballpark in the first Big 12 series of the year. WVU won the first game, 10-4, and the final game, 2-0, sandwiched around a 4-1 Cougar victory in the second game.

Sophomore Logan Sauve leads the team with a .317 batting average while junior Grant Hussey has a team-high four home runs. Sophomore Benjamin Lumsden has driven in 13 runs to lead WVU and has also hit three home runs.

On the mound, Hambleton Oliver has a 1.88 ERA out of the bullpen to go along with 16 strikeouts. Sophomore Gavin Van Kempen has also been a key contributor in relief with 15 strikeouts in 10.1 innings pitched.

Led by Head Coach Greg Beals in his second season, Marshall is 6-9 in 2024 and were picked 12th in the Preseason Sun Belt poll. The Thundering Herd are coming off a 2-1 series win over Southeast Missouri over the weekend.

Calin Smith leads the team with a .356 batting average while Owen Ayers has a team-high five home runs. Bryce Blevins. Griffin Miller, and Nicholas Weyrich all have ERAs below two out of the bu l l p e n .
