Canada’s best kitchen and best primary suite, arguably the two most important parts of a home, can be found right here in Edmonton.

Both were built by Vicky’s Homes and both are part of one of Vicky’s most popular models, the Vernazza.

The Vernazza was a finalist in four categories at the recent 2024 Canadian Home Builders’ Association National Awards for Housing Excellence. It won Best Custom Kitchen and Best Bedroom/Primary Suite, outduelling four other Canadian finalists in each category at the awards held in Saint John, N.B. It made it to the finalist leg for Best Interior Decorating (Model/Show Home) and Best Bathroom.

“This home was completed less than a year ago, in the Windermere neighbourhood,” said Vicky Kujundzic, owner of Vicky’s Homes. “It was our show home, but sold quickly and is unfortunately, no longer available for viewing. The Vernazza is now our most popular house plan. We were often told it was the perfect balance for form and function.”

At 4,297 square feet, the Vernazza will make your jaw drop, Kujundzic said. Some of the home’s features include a spice kitchen, a main floor den/bedroom, an expansive master bedroom suite, and three kids’ bedrooms upstairs with ensuites.

“This modern masterpiece was designed specifically for the corner lot with large expansive windows wrapping the entire front entrance,” said Kujundzic about the award-winning home. “A two-storey, jaw-dropping, open-to-above floating steel staircase as you walk through the front door is encompassed by floor-to-ceiling windows, adding to both the interior and exterior esthetic.”

Building the Best Kitchen

First and foremost, it was about creating functionality, then it was about incorporating durable and visually striking materials and products like Dekton countertops and wall cladding throughout to make a statement.

“The kitchen features individual Pitt cooking burners mounted directly into the Dekton countertop for an uninterrupted surface,” said Kujundzic noting these are individual burners that you can install in whatever number and whatever configuration you like. “The Dekton also carries all the way around the back wall of the kitchen as a floating backsplash and waterfall island countertop. The fridge, freezer and dishwasher were cladded in cabinetry panels with champagne bronze handles.”

Then there are the features you don’t see.

“We are known for our hidden doors,” said Kujundzic. “We always camouflage the access from our kitchens to pantry and spice kitchens so that the sleekness of the space is continuous. This home has a good-sized secondary kitchen, which included a full sized fridge, cooktop, hood fan, sink and dishwasher. The spice kitchen also connects to the expansive mudroom that has a plethora of custom organizers for shoes, accessories, coats, jackets and even for your furry friends.”

Meanwhile, the adjacent dining area has a fabulous wet bar providing all beverages within arm’s reach. It includes a built-in coffee maker, wine fridge and wine storage, instant hot water tap and ample cabinetry for dishes and glasses. From the dining room, patio doors lead you to a covered deck with soffit heaters, electric screens and an outdoor television, which offers an easy transition to entertaining outdoors — especially when watching the Edmonton Oilers in the playoffs, Kujundzic added.

Canada’s Best Primary Suite

It wasn’t as simple as just designing the primary.

“In the initial design phase, we felt that redesigning the typical two-storey great room to make it more functional, was overdue,” explains Kujundzic. “So, we created 13-foot high ceilings across the back of the home, creating useable floor space above. This change not only flooded an abundance of natural light through the main floor but also enabled us to design an exceptional primary suite, nestled on its own level that’s just a few steps up from the second floor.

‘It was almost like an executive hotel suite. It has a secluded TV viewing area with balcony access and great views of the park site. The master bedroom is luxurious with its custom slat panelling, custom bed and headboard, seating area, and double-sided fireplace into the ensuite.

As for the ensuite, it adds a richness to the home.

“Our ensuite’s innovative design caters to luxury aficionados by incorporating large format tiles, an abundance of high-end cabinetry, a steam shower, fireplace and a free-standing tub,” said Kujundzic. “This blend of opulent materials and features distinguishes our product, ensuring it surpasses competitors. The large format tiles evoke modern elegance, the lavish cabinetry signifies practical luxury, while the steam shower, fireplace and free-standing tub collectively epitomize indulgent living. This home stands out as the pinnacle of upscale living, delivering on the promise of a truly luxurious lifestyle.”

Kujundzic, who is no stranger to her home building operation winning awards — Vicky’s has won multiple awards at the local, provincial and national level — takes nothing for granted.

“It’s always a nail-biting experience,” she said. “It was stiff competition, to say the least.”
