Prep Roundup: Grabo earns low-medalist honors, University captures Region I golf title

Class AAA

The University High School golf team captured the Region I team championship in a grueling, six-hour rain-plagued battle at Highland Springs Golf Course in Wellsburg on Monday.

The Hawks bested Wheeling Park by four strokes to claim the title. The Patriots three best scores totaled 228 while UHS earned a 224. Both teams have qualified for the 2024 WVSSAC state golf tournament next Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct 8-9, at the Jones Course at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling.

UHS senior Daniel Grabo earned co-medalist honors alongside Park’s Andrew Pennybacker with a 1-over 73 on the round.

Along with Grabo’s 73, Owen Estel shot a 3-over 75, while Will Biddington fired a 4-over 76 to help lead the Hawks.

Morgantown finished third at 230, two strokes behind the Patriots for the second and final qualifying team spot for the state tournament. The Mohigans did have both of the individual qualifiers to come out of the field in junior Solas Chhin-Kreiner and senior Gabe Watson, who each finished up with a 4-over 76 for their round.

Preston High finished in fifth at 246, four strokes behind Bridgeport for fourth at 242.

Class A

Clay-Battelle junior Ryan Parker qualified for the 2024 WVSSAC state golf tournament as one of two individuals from Region I with a score of 87 on Monday at Highland Springs.
