Mountaineer Area Council Boy Scouts appoints first female chair

On the 114th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, the Mountaineer Area Council, celebrated this milestone by appointing Amy Garbrick as its first female chair of the governing board, effective Feb. 8.

Garbrick brings a wealth of experience and dedication to her new role. Her journey with the Boy Scouts began nearly a decade ago when she initiated a Cub Scout pack for her son in Reedsville. Both of her sons are active in Scouting, and Garbrick has been a passionate advocate for the program. She has been instrumental in assisting with the operations of Camp Mountaineer, Scouting’s expansive 1,000-acre property located in Morgantown, as well as supporting fundraising events and activities to benefit the
organization.

During her time as a board member, she has served on numerous committees, including activities and civic service, camping and outdoor program, and development.

Garbrick brings enthusiasm and passion to this leadership role, and she is committed to expanding Scouting’s footprint in the communities of north-central West Virginia. In this role, she is focused on prioritizing and supporting character development opportunities, while fostering growth and inclusivity within the organization.

“I’m looking forward to building on the strong legacy of service of Mountaineer Area Council,” said Garbrick. “Scouting provides diverse educational and recreational activities for youth in the region. I know the value of these outstanding programs, and we want to expand those opportunities to more youth and
families so that they can benefit from these unique experiences.”

Garbrick, who works at West Virginia University, succeeds Lee Pyles, who served as chair for the past three years.

The Mountaineer Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, serves the youth of north-central West Virginia, providing programs and experiences that help young people build character, develop leadership skills and become responsible, caring and engaged citizens.
