Morgantown’s Sharron Young nominated for McDonald’s All-American Game

MORGANTOWN — As a back-to-back state title winner, there isn’t too much left Morgantown senior Sharron Young has to accomplish. Anything he achieves this year will just be gravy on what has already been a stellar high school career.

That’s not to suggest, however, there aren’t big things on the horizon for the Mohigan standout. On Tuesday, it was announced that Young has been nominated for the 2024 McDonald’s All-American Game, held April 2 in Houston, TX.

“I’m really proud of Sharron,” MHS coach Dave Tallman said. “He’s earned it. To be a nominee for the McDonald’s game is quite the honor.”

Through 10 games this season, Young has been a point-per-minute player for the Mohigans (9-1), averaging 22 points in 22 minutes. He also averages 7.1 rebounds, 8.4 assists and 6.3 steals per game. He has signed to play Division-I basketball at Akron University next year.

Young was one of six players from West Virginia to be nominated, five boys and one girl. In addition to Young, nominees are Zion Blevins (Chapmanville), Cole Joy (Parkersburg South), Jackson Smith (Parkersburg South), Quinton Burlenski (Wheeling Central) and Gracie Shamblin (Parkersburg South).

On Jan. 24, the top 24 boys and 24 girls will be selected to play in the game, which will feature two teams of 12.

Even before then, however, Young could reach a different milestone. After reaching 1,000 career points earlier this season, Young is now closing in on the all-time Morgantown scoring record, currently held by former MHS and West Virginia University player and WVU radio broadcaster Jay Jacobs.

Jacobs, who graduated from MHS in 1956, has held the record of 1,268 points for nearly 70 years. Young currently sits at 1,131.

Just like when he was approaching 1,000 points, Young said he’s trying not to think about breaking the record and is just focused on winning games.

“I’m aware of it, but it’s nothing,” Young said after scoring 20 points against rival University last Friday. “I’m just trying to go out there and be a leader for my team and try to continue to win.”

Other milestones for Young this season would be the rare state title three-peat and he could become Morgantown’s first-ever Bill Evans Award winner as the West Virginia State Player of the Year.
